The Buffalo Bills added veteran kicker Matt Prater to their practice squad on Thursday, raising concerns about the status of Tyler Bass, who has been dealing with pelvic soreness and practiced in limited capacity on Wednesday.
Prater, 41, impressed in a workout this week after going unsigned since the Arizona Cardinals released him in March. A proven leg with 18 NFL seasons, Prater has played for the Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions and Cardinals, converting 407-of-487 field goals (83.6%) and 587-of-603 extra points (97.3%) across 254 games.
If Bass is unavailable, the Bills are expected to elevate him for Sunday’s season opener against the Baltimore Ravens.
Buffalo also shuffled its roster on defense and special teams. Defensive tackle DeWayne Carter was moved to season-ending injured reserve, while linebacker and special teams contributor Sam Franklin was signed to the 53-man roster.
Franklin, who previously played under Bills special teams coordinator Chris Tabor in Carolina, fills a depth and coverage role. His addition opened a practice squad spot for Prater.
