Motorcyclist killed in crash on Route 248 in Independence

A 49-year-old man from Independence was killed Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle on State Route 248, according to New York State Police.

Troopers say the crash happened around 3:08 p.m. on September 1 in the town of Independence. The investigation revealed that a 2004 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was traveling west in the eastbound lane when it collided head-on with a 2017 Toyota RAV4.

The motorcyclist, Douglas F. Barney, was pronounced dead at the scene. All occupants of the RAV4 were transported to Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville with minor injuries.

An autopsy for Barney has been scheduled at Olean General Hospital.

The NYSP Collision Reconstruction Unit and Bureau of Criminal Investigation assisted at the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
