Pete Alonso crushed two of the New York Mets’ four home runs while rookie Nolan McLean delivered another strong outing in a 12-5 rout of the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night at Comerica Park, taking the first two games of the series.
Alonso’s solo shot in the first inning set the tone, and he later added a second blast for his 33rd of the year. Juan Soto stayed red-hot with his fifth homer in as many games and 37th overall, and Luis Torrens broke things open with a three-run drive, his fifth of the season.
The Mets’ offense erupted for 17 hits, with Brandon Nimmo, Jeff McNeil, and Brett Baty each recording three apiece. McNeil drove in multiple runs, while Soto and Nimmo continued to spark rallies with timely hits.
McLean overcame a shaky start to earn his fourth straight win, becoming the first pitcher in 11 years to start his career 4-0. The right-hander allowed two runs on three hits across six innings, striking out seven. He has surrendered just four earned runs through his first 26.1 big-league innings.
