New York may soon end anonymous child abuse reporting to stop misuse of the system, according to Spectrum News 1.
A bill on Gov. Kathy Hochul’s desk would require callers to give their name and contact info—kept confidential—to file a report. Advocates say this would curb false reports often used as harassment, especially in domestic violence or neighbor disputes.
Opponents warn it might deter real reports, but supporters argue police or 911 remain options. State Sen. Jabari Brisport, the bill’s sponsor, says the current system unfairly targets Black and brown families and abuse victims.
