Flesh-eating bacteria kills 5 in Florida, cases surge

A rare and deadly bacteria has killed five people in Florida as Vibrio vulnificus infections spike, CBS12 reports.

The state health department confirmed 20 cases so far in 2025, up from 11 just a month ago. Most infections come from raw shellfish or open wounds exposed to warm, salty water. Storm surges and rising temperatures are increasing risks, especially for older adults and those with health issues.

The CDC warns the bacteria can kill within days. Last year, Florida saw 19 deaths from Vibrio infections.
