Kyle McCord’s NFL journey hit its first speed bump Monday when the Philadelphia Eagles released the former Syracuse star, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported.
McCord, a sixth-round pick in April’s draft, ended up the odd man out in a crowded quarterback room. Tanner McKee is expected to back up Jalen Hurts, but with McKee nursing a finger injury and his Week 1 status uncertain, the Eagles traded for veteran Sam Howell on Sunday, leaving no roster spot for McCord.
The 22-year-old, who transferred from Ohio State to Syracuse last year, rewrote the program’s record book with 4,779 passing yards and 34 touchdowns.
Despite the release, McCord is a strong candidate to land on a practice squad when teams finalize their 16-man rosters on Wednesday.
