New York’s Health Department failed to shift thousands of seniors to Medicare, racking up nearly $500 million in avoidable Medicaid costs, according to the state comptroller’s office.
The audit says the state kept paying for care Medicare should’ve covered — even after a 2023 warning. Since then, Medicaid spent another $190 million on 18,000 people who were eligible for Medicare but never enrolled.
Health officials defended the spending, but the comptroller blamed “inadequate oversight” as federal aid cuts loom.
