Schuyler County to receive up to $38K from Sandoz opioid settlement

Schuyler County will receive up to $38,000 from a settlement with drug company Sandoz, Inc. and its affiliates over claims tied to the opioid crisis.

The county legislature approved the settlement Monday, authorizing County Attorney Steven Getman to sign the legal documents. The agreement releases Sandoz and related entities from a pending lawsuit in exchange for the payment, which will be made in 2026 and used only for opioid remediation and abatement.

Officials said possible uses for the money include support for police and first responders, addiction treatment, social services, and other anti-drug programs. The Sandoz settlement brings Schuyler County’s total opioid-related settlements to more than $862,000 since 2021.

The county has previously reached agreements with Johnson & Johnson, McKesson Corporation, Cardinal Health, Amerisource Bergen, Actavis, and Teva Pharmaceuticals. Its lawsuit against other defendants remains pending, with the potential for additional funds.

County Administrator M. Shawn Rosno said the settlements help offset costs tied to battling opioid addiction and preventing deaths.
