Seneca Lake update shows clear water, no HABs

Seneca Lake saw another week of clear, healthy conditions with no reports of harmful algal blooms, according to the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association.

From August 1–7, surface water temperatures averaged 76.2°F at 1.3 meters depth, turbidity measured a very clear 0.37 NTU, and dissolved oxygen was at 112.1% saturation — a normal summer condition caused by algae and aquatic plants producing extra oxygen in sunny, calm weather. The lake level stood at 445.75 feet.

While no HABs were detected, Pure Waters reminds visitors that conditions can change quickly and advises checking the water before swimming or boating. Harmful blooms, which can produce toxins, often appear as green or blue-green scum, streaks, or paint-like swirls near shorelines and quiet coves. Suspicious blooms can be reported to the DEC or directly to Pure Waters.

The weekly report also highlighted ongoing research by the Finger Lakes Institute and volunteer monitoring, as well as new opportunities for residents to help track invasive species through the Finger Lakes PRISM Trail Survey Program.
