The state DEC is nearing a decision on air quality permits for the Competitive Power Ventures Valley Energy Center, a Hudson Valley natural gas plant that’s operated without final approval for seven years, according to Spectrum News 1. Democratic lawmakers and environmentalists say renewing the permit would violate the 2019 Climate Act, which bars projects that undermine emissions goals.
Critics accuse Gov. Kathy Hochul of favoring fossil fuel interests and point to her approval of a $4 billion National Grid upgrade and openness to pipeline talks with President Trump. Hochul’s office counters that she remains committed to renewable energy but must balance affordability, grid reliability, and economic development.
The DEC says it’s reviewing more than 1,000 public comments and will apply strict federal and state standards before ruling. CPV has pledged $1 million toward emissions-reduction projects but proposed no operational changes.
