Stefanik urges Canadian PM to act on wildfire crisis

Rep. Elise Stefanik is pressing Canada’s prime minister to take stronger action against wildfires that are clouding New York’s air and disrupting daily life.

In a joint appeal with Rep. Nick Langworthy, Stefanik called on Prime Minister Mark Carney to direct Canadian officials to improve wildfire prevention and response efforts. The letter specifically urges Natural Resources Canada and the Canadian Forest Service to act.

“New York is facing another summer of significant air quality issues due to smoke from Canadian wildfires,” Stefanik said. “State officials have advised residents to limit outdoor activity. Schools, camps, and events have been impacted.”

She cited growing concerns over “Canada’s forest mismanagement and lack of effective deterrence of human-caused fire,” and called for more coordination between U.S. and Canadian agencies to protect public health.

The letter was released Wednesday from Saratoga, New York.
