National Grid donates 4,000 backpacks to WNY students

Thousands of Western New York students will head back to school this fall with a boost in supplies—and confidence—thanks to National Grid’s latest community initiative.

Through its “Empowering Futures – One Backpack at a Time” program, the utility company is distributing more than 4,000 backpacks filled with school supplies and personal care items to students in underserved communities across the region.

“Providing backpacks filled with essential supplies is more than a gesture; it’s a statement that we see their potential and are committed to supporting their journey,” said Robert Simmons III, National Grid’s Vice President for US Social Impact and Community Engagement.

The donations will support kids in Buffalo through partnerships with organizations including Back to Basics Outreach Ministry, Queen City Clean Waters, and the Resource Council of WNY. In addition, hundreds of students in the Dunkirk City, Livonia Central, Niagara Falls City, and Olean City school districts will also receive supplies.

National Grid says the program is part of its broader effort to empower the next generation and strengthen local communities through education and opportunity.
