Hochul touts justice reform win, signals more changes

Gov. Kathy Hochul celebrated her successful push to revise New York’s discovery laws, saying the new rules will prevent cases from being dismissed over minor technical errors, according to Spectrum News.

The changes, set to take effect Thursday, come after weeks of tense budget negotiations and criticism from lawmakers who accused Hochul of using her power to delay spending. She did not rule out revisiting other reforms, including the state’s Raise the Age law.

Hochul argued the reforms still protect due process but close loopholes that hindered prosecutions. Critics say the final version was diluted, while some progressives believe existing court rulings already addressed the issue.
