The New York Mets came within two outs of being no-hit on Wednesday, falling 4-1 to the Cleveland Guardians to wrap up a frustrating homestand. New York has now dropped four straight and eight of its last nine.
Cleveland right-hander Gavin Williams dominated from the start, keeping the Mets hitless into the ninth inning. With one out in the final frame, Juan Soto spoiled the no-hit bid by launching a solo home run to center on Williams’ 117th pitch. It was the only hit of the game for New York. Williams exited to a standing ovation after 8.2 innings of one-hit ball, allowing one run while striking out six and walking four.
David Peterson gave the Mets another decent effort on the mound, but didn’t get run support. The lefty allowed a solo homer to David Fry in the second and a two-run blast to Angel Martinez an inning later. He finished with six innings pitched, five hits, four earned runs, two walks, and seven strikeouts.
Brandon Nimmo worked three walks, but New York failed to capitalize. Mark Vientos came the closest to breaking up the no-hitter earlier with a seventh-inning flare to right, but it was snared on a diving catch by C.J. Kayfus.
After a day off on Thursday, the Mets (63-52) head to Milwaukee to open a three-game series against the surging Brewers on Friday at 8:10 p.m.
