Ithaca students turn summer into discovery labs

This summer, 35 Ithaca College students tackled self-designed research and creative projects with support from the Summer Scholars Program, according to IC News. From building robots out of trash to analyzing owl DNA and exploring Burmese gender rituals, their work spanned disciplines, cultures, and personal passions—all while being mentored by faculty and paid for their efforts.

Projects included Vic ’26’s found-object art installation, Sofia Gross ’27’s genetics research on owl species hybridization, and Zoe Gainer ’25’s psychology survey of autistic students’ college transitions. Each student designed their own project, honing skills and uncovering insights far beyond classroom learning.

The experience didn’t just produce research—it reshaped career paths and academic goals. Scholars gained confidence, direction, and in some cases, the spark for future graduate studies or professional work.
