Finger Lakes health centers brace for Medicaid cuts

Community health centers are marking 60 years of service during this year’s National Health Center Week, but potential federal Medicaid cuts could cast a shadow over the celebration, according to Finger Lakes Times. In the Finger Lakes Region, centers like Finger Lakes Community Health care for nearly 29,000 patients annually, many of whom rely on Medicaid.

Proposed changes could lead to widespread coverage loss through new reapplication rules and work requirements. Rural areas are especially vulnerable due to fewer providers, chronic illness rates, and long travel distances. Cuts could force centers to reduce hours, close sites, or increase ER visits for basic care.

Medicaid’s role in supporting working families, seniors, and children is vital, advocates say. Without it, many in rural communities may be left without access to preventive or long-term care.
