Rochester Diocese abuse survivors approve $246M deal

Hundreds of sexual abuse survivors have unanimously accepted a $246 million settlement with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester, according to 13WHAM.

The payout, part of a bankruptcy case filed in 2019, would compensate 475 victims once approved by a judge on September 5. Survivors like Carol DuPré, who was abused at 15 by a now-deceased priest, say the resolution brings closure, though not healing.

The diocese sought bankruptcy after lawsuits surged under New York’s Child Victims Act. Survivors hope this deal marks the end of a painful chapter and the start of long-awaited recognition for their courage.
