Mets land electric reliever Ryan Helsley in trade with Cardinals

The New York Mets continued their bullpen makeover by acquiring two-time All-Star reliever Ryan Helsley from the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday in exchange for three minor leaguers, including top prospect Jesus Baez.

Helsley, 31, is expected to work in a setup role behind closer Edwin Díaz despite his strong track record as one of MLB’s top closers. He has posted a 3.00 ERA with 21 saves in 36 appearances this season, after leading the league with 49 saves and a 2.03 ERA in 2024. From 2022 to 2024, Helsley’s 82 saves ranked sixth in baseball, while his 1.83 ERA trailed only Emmanuel Clase among qualified relievers.

The move came just hours after the Mets traded for Giants submariner Tyler Rogers. Together, Helsley and Rogers offer contrasting styles. Rogers thrives on soft contact and ground balls, while Helsley brings overpowering velocity, with a fastball averaging over 99 mph.

New York began its bullpen revamp last week with the addition of lefty Gregory Soto. The trio aims to reinforce a Mets bullpen that has struggled in recent months, ranking near the bottom of the league in ERA since June 1.

In the trade, St. Louis received Baez (Mets’ No. 5 prospect), plus right-handers Nate Dohm and Frank Elissalt.

The Mets, who hold a narrow lead in the National League East, are also reportedly seeking a center fielder ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline.
