Corning man charged with grand larceny after Walmart theft

A Corning man is facing a felony grand larceny charge after allegedly stealing over $2,100 worth of merchandise from a Walmart store in Horseheads.

New York State Police say 47-year-old Peter E. McCarthy was arrested on July 25 after he was seen pushing two full carts of unpaid merchandise out of the Walmart on County Route 64. Store asset protection staff contacted police around 4:00 p.m. and reported that the suspect was last seen walking toward a nearby Starbucks.

Troopers located McCarthy and brought him back to the store, where he was positively identified by Walmart staff. He was processed at the State Police barracks in Horseheads.

Investigators later discovered that McCarthy had an active Superior Court warrant from SP Horseheads and another outstanding warrant from the Elmira City Police Department. Due to his prior felony convictions and existing warrants, McCarthy was arraigned in Town of Horseheads Court and remanded to the Chemung County Jail without bail.

His next court appearance is scheduled for August 13 at 9:00 a.m.
