Mets edge Giants for sixth straight win (highlights)

The New York Mets leaned on strong pitching and timely defense Saturday night, holding off the Giants for a 2-1 win in San Francisco to extend their win streak to six games.

David Peterson battled through traffic all night but limited the damage, allowing just one run across six gritty innings. The left-hander scattered eight singles, walked three, and struck out four on 91 pitches, lowering his season ERA to 2.38. Clutch defense helped Peterson escape multiple jams, including inning-ending double plays in the first and second, and a pair of big plays from Pete Alonso in the third.

The Mets’ offense didn’t break through until the sixth. Juan Soto walked, stole his 14th base of the year, and after Starling Marte reached and Rafael Devers botched a potential double play, Mark Vientos delivered a two-run double to flip a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead.

The bullpen took over from there. Reed Garrett and Ryne Stanek each worked clean innings before Edwin Díaz held off a late Giants threat in the ninth. After a near game-tying homer by Jung Hoo Lee turned into a double, Díaz struck out Mike Yastrzemski, and Alonso sealed it with a leaping snag to rob Patrick Bailey.

Box Score

The Mets (61-44) remain atop the National League East by a half-game and go for the sweep Sunday behind ace Kodai Senga, with first pitch set for 7:10 p.m.
