Critics slam NY’s 2040 energy plan over gas reliance

New York’s latest draft energy blueprint has ignited backlash for favoring fossil fuels over renewables, according to WETM. While aiming to meet surging power demands by 2040, the plan allows natural gas pipelines and nuclear energy to remain key parts of the mix.

Governor Kathy Hochul defended the strategy as a “dependable” approach to support industries like chip manufacturing and AI. But environmental groups argue the plan weakens the state’s climate law and bypasses the Build Public Renewables Act, which empowers public agencies to expand green power.

The draft plan projects a 26% electricity demand spike by 2040. Advocates say cleaner air could save thousands of lives and create 60,000 energy jobs, if the state leans into solar, wind, and geothermal instead.
