New York senator pushes social media warning labels, algorithm control

A New York lawmaker is targeting the mental health effects of social media with two new bills, according to Capital Tonight. State Sen. Andrew Gounardes introduced legislation that would let users disable algorithm-driven content and require warning labels on platforms—similar to cigarette health warnings.

One bill, S4505, has already passed both chambers of the Legislature. Gounardes says the goal is to build a “user-first” digital space amid rising concerns over social media’s addictive design.

His proposals complement Gov. Kathy Hochul’s call for phone-free schools and reflect a broader state push to regulate tech’s influence on youth.
