Danby Town Hall to go fossil-free with heat pump upgrade

Danby Town Hall is going green, thanks to a $60,000 state grant that will fund the installation of air-source heat pumps, replacing the building’s natural gas heating system. The project marks a major step in the town’s push to eliminate fossil fuel use.

Built in the 1840s, the hall will now be heated and cooled by five heat pump units, with integration into existing ductwork. The upgrade was recommended in a decade-old energy audit and aligns with Danby’s long-standing environmental goals.

Though short-term savings may be limited due to rising electric rates, town officials say the project is about reducing emissions, not just costs. Additional funds will repair an EV charger, with more sustainability efforts likely to follow.
