Dr. Margaret Spinosa joins Auburn Community Hospital team

Auburn Community Hospital has welcomed a new gastrointestinal physician with strong local ties, as Dr. Margaret Spinosa begins her role at Auburn Gastroenterology.

Dr. Spinosa, a Central New York native and Syracuse University graduate, officially started on June 2. She said returning to the region to practice medicine is a full-circle moment. “I was born and raised here, so Auburn is near and dear to my heart,” she said. “It’s critically important that we deliver the highest quality of care possible to the patients we serve.”

Dr. Spinosa completed her medical degree at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and trained in Pennsylvania, with an internship and residency at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, followed by a Gastroenterology Fellowship at Lehigh Valley.

Her arrival was celebrated by hospital leadership. “It means a lot to the people we serve to have highly respected and talented physicians on staff who are from Central New York,” said Scott A. Berlucchi, President and CEO of Auburn Community Hospital.

Dr. Spinosa joins a team that works closely with the hospital’s Comprehensive Cancer Center. This proximity allows patients to receive coordinated care without long-distance travel.

“Gastroenterology is one field of discipline that’s incredibly pivotal and important in colon cancer screening,” Dr. Spinosa said, urging regular screenings for individuals aged 45 and older. “Even if you are asymptomatic… it is important to be checked and tested regularly for colon cancer.”

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jamie Syrett emphasized the hospital’s mission: “Our patients are cared for by doctors who live in our community, care about our community, and who work hard every day to make Cayuga County a healthier place to live.”

Dr. Spinosa expressed deep appreciation for the support she’s received since joining the hospital. “Practicing medicine and helping people heal is very important to me. I’m honored to give back in this way, to a community that gave so much to me.”

Appointments can be made by calling Auburn Gastroenterology at 315-253-5151. The office is located at 1 Park Avenue in Auburn. More details are available at AuburnHospital.org.
