Five new firefighters join Canandaigua’s ranks

The Canandaigua Fire Department has welcomed five new firefighters, marking a fresh chapter for the city’s emergency services. According to the Democrat and Chronicle, Fire Chief Frank Magnera led the swearing-in ceremony for Max Mahoney, Aaron Fitzgerald, Matt Mackershar, Ryan Clair, and Chris Szatkowski at the department’s Main Street station.

Each recruit received a department badge, pinned by family members, symbolizing their commitment. Mayor Bob Palumbo and union president Jake Bement praised the profession’s challenges and rewards, calling it a “job lottery.” Clair and Szatkowski are the newest hires, helping fill recent vacancies.

The ceremony also honored community contributions, including a repurposed fire ladder lectern and a turnout gear project led by local students and scouts.
