The New York Mets snapped their stretch of series losses by holding off the Milwaukee Brewers, 3-2, on Thursday night at Citi Field behind a much-needed pitching performance from David Peterson.
After a rain delay, Brandon Nimmo put the Mets on the board early with a solo home run in the second inning. In the sixth, Starling Marte and Francisco Lindor set the table with back-to-back singles before Juan Soto punched an RBI hit through the right side. Pete Alonso followed with a double off the wall to push the lead to 3-1.
Peterson, looking to rebound from two rough outings, delivered 6.2 innings and allowed just two runs, only one earned, on five hits while striking out four. He benefited from a pair of double plays after the defense cost him a run in the fourth when Brett Baty dropped a liner and Mark Vientos mishandled a potential double-play ball.
Andruw Monasterio’s seventh-inning homer cut the lead to one and chased Peterson, but Ryne Stanek picked him up, retiring four straight hitters and striking out the side in the eighth.
Edwin DÃaz closed it out, with Luis Torrens and Lindor combining to erase a critical stolen base attempt before DÃaz notched his 17th save.
Next, the Mets (50-38) host the Yankees (48-39) in the Subway Series that begins Friday at 3:10 p.m.
