The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Friday to limit the reach of federal judges’ nationwide injunctions, allowing parts of former President Trump’s controversial birthright citizenship order to proceed in certain states.
The 6-3 decision said lower courts overstepped by blocking the order nationwide, restricting enforcement only in states and groups directly involved in the lawsuit. The ruling doesn’t settle the constitutionality of the policy, which limits automatic citizenship for children born in the U.S. unless a parent has legal status.
The dissenting justices warned the move undermines legal protections, while the case returns to lower courts for continued litigation.
