Cayuga County and other New York localities are urging the state to resume timely transfers of “state-ready” inmates to prisons, following major delays linked to a recent correction officer strike and staffing cuts, The Citizen reports.
County jails are holding more than 2,400 inmates sentenced to state time, up from 200 before the strike. Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck said this overload strains space and staff, with costs far exceeding the $100 daily state reimbursement.
The Department of Corrections says it resumed transfers in April and May and is working to address the backlog, but counties warn the burden is unsustainable.
