Lawmakers push for special session on immigrant protections

  • Staff Report

Some New York legislators are demanding a special session to pass a bill that would shield immigrant information from federal authorities, according to Spectrum News. Frustrated by the lack of progress during the regular session, State Sens. Jabari Brisport and Julia Salazar are urging colleagues to reconvene and approve the New York for All Act.

The bill aims to restrict local and state law enforcement from assisting federal immigration agencies beyond criminal cases. Advocates argue there wasn’t enough time post-budget to push it through, despite broad support. Gov. Kathy Hochul has defended related policies but remained noncommittal on whether she’d sign the bill.

While progressives rally for action, Republicans firmly oppose the proposal. Assemblyman Mike Fitzpatrick warned against weakening cooperation with ICE, and the chances of a special session remain slim.
