The New York Yankees finally broke out of their week-long offensive slump on Thursday afternoon, topping the Los Angeles Angels, 7-3, at Yankee Stadium to halt a six-game losing streak and avoid a four-game sweep.
Carlos Rodón allowed three solo home runs but still delivered a quality start, tossing six innings with seven strikeouts and just one walk. After allowing a first-inning homer to Mike Trout and another to Jo Adell in the second, Rodón settled in and held the Angels scoreless until Taylor Ward went deep in the sixth. Despite the long balls, Rodón improved to 8-5 and now holds a 3.10 ERA.
New York’s offense, dormant for days, came to life in the second inning. DJ LeMahieu singled with two outs, and Trent Grisham followed with a go-ahead two-run home run. Just two pitches later, Paul Goldschmidt added a solo shot, capping a three-run frame that gave the Yankees a 4-2 lead. Grisham finished 2-for-3 with a double, raising his OPS to .823.
Cody Bellinger tacked on an RBI single in the seventh, and after a rain delay in the eighth, the Yankees padded their lead with two more runs on productive outs from Anthony Volpe and Austin Wells. Devin Williams struck out the side in the ninth to seal the win.
The Yankees (43-31) now turn their attention to a key divisional matchup as the Baltimore Orioles come to town Friday night. Max Fried (9-2, 1.89 ERA) gets the start, with the first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
