The Steuben County town of Cameron has officially banned the use of sewage sludge on farm fields, according to Spectrum News. The unanimous vote follows years of concern from residents like Wayne Wells, who believes local sludge use tainted his creek with toxic “forever chemicals.”
The law passed without public opposition and mirrors actions by other New York communities, including nearby Thurston and Schoharie County. Albany County recently extended its moratorium, signaling growing statewide momentum.
A related state bill proposing a five-year moratorium on sewage sludge is moving through the Legislature with bipartisan support and is currently before the Ways and Means Committee.
