Two Canandaigua residents charged in assault and witness intimidation case

Two Canandaigua residents were arrested on June 9 after allegedly assaulting and threatening a person who had contacted police, authorities said.

Rita Thapar, 65, and Abhay Thapar, 34, were each charged with assault in the second degree and intimidating a victim or witness in the second degree, according to the City of Canandaigua Police Department.

Police allege that both individuals, while at a residence in the city, used a dangerous instrument to cause physical injury to a person who had called authorities to file a report. Investigators say the attack involved intimidation and was carried out together.

Rita and Abhay Thapar were each processed and transported to CAP arraignment. Officials did not release further information about the victim or the nature of the incident that led to the police report.
