The New York Mets (39-23) rode Pete Alonso’s big bat and a dominant pitching performance to a 6-1 win over the Dodgers (37-25) on Wednesday night in Los Angeles, securing the season series with one game still to play.
New York wasted no time getting on the board, capitalizing on a Dodgers miscue in the first to plate a run before Alonso launched an opposite-field, two-run home run to give the Mets a 3-0 lead. He wasn’t done there, Alonso delivered again in the eighth, unloading a 447-foot, three-run blast to put the game out of reach. The slugger now leads the National League with 53 RBI and tied Darryl Strawberry for the most multi-homer games in Mets history (22).
On the mound, Griffin Canning turned in his finest start of the season. The right-hander blanked the Dodgers over six innings, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out seven. He escaped a fifth-inning jam by fanning Kiké Hernández and Shohei Ohtani back-to-back, flashing sharp command and a filthy changeup.
José Castillo worked out of trouble in the seventh, then cruised through the eighth to extend his scoreless streak to six innings with the Mets. Ryne Stanek gave up a solo homer in the ninth but shut the door to finish it.
Juan Soto reached base three times via walk, Brandon Nimmo scored twice, and Jeff McNeil extended his hitting streak to six games.
The Mets will go for the series win on Thursday at 4:10 p.m. with David Peterson on the hill.
