NY lawmakers sound alarm on AI regulation threats

New York lawmakers are racing to regulate artificial intelligence as concerns mount over its rapid evolution, according to Spectrum News. Assemblyman Alex Bores and Senators Kristen Gonzalez and Andrew Gounardes are backing legislation aimed at curbing AI misuse, including deepfakes and transparency issues.

The proposed “RAISE Act” and “Stop Deep Fakes” bill remain in committee, but a federal move could stall state efforts. A provision in the House’s reconciliation bill would block states from enforcing AI laws for a decade, prompting fears that vital safeguards may never materialize.

Bores, warning of missed opportunities, emphasized that regulation must arrive before AI’s growth outpaces lawmakers. Developers caution the window to prevent harm could close by 2026 without urgent intervention.
