A homeless man is facing charges in Bath after police say he used his deceased brother’s identity to avoid an outstanding warrant.
Steven J. Hirsch, 37, was first encountered by Village of Bath Police on May 12 around 10 a.m. after officers spotted him slumped over the wheel of a vehicle in the parking lot of the Super 8 Hotel. What began as a welfare check quickly turned into a suspicious activity investigation. Officers later determined Hirsch had provided his late brother’s information to evade arrest.
A warrant was issued, and on June 2, New York State Police located Hirsch and turned him over to Bath officers. He was charged with criminal impersonation in the second degree and obstructing governmental administration, both misdemeanors.
Hirsch was taken to Steuben County Jail for CAP arraignment and later released.
