Yates County leaders are warning that proposed federal budget changes could significantly reduce Medicaid and SNAP benefits for local residents, according to reporting by The Finger Lakes Times. Social Services Commissioner Amy Miller said cuts would especially impact working families and local healthcare providers.
The bill would slash retroactive Medicaid coverage and increase work requirements for SNAP recipients. Miller noted that many affected residents are already employed part-time without access to employer insurance, and the policy shifts will create more red tape for her department.
Hospitals and nursing homes, such as Soldiers and Sailors, could also lose vital revenue if coverage gaps grow. With up to 8 million people projected to lose insurance nationwide, local officials say the fallout in Yates County could be serious.
