Lawmakers weigh plan to arm paramedics with opioids

New York lawmakers are facing urgent calls to let paramedics administer opioid medications that help ease withdrawal, according to Spectrum News 1. Despite a 30% drop in overdose deaths, a surge in lethal contaminants like xylazine has deepened the opioid crisis.

At an Albany hearing, experts pushed for legislation allowing paramedics to offer buprenorphine after using overdose reversal drugs. Assemblyman John McDonald, who sponsors the bill, argued it would both save lives and reduce repeat 911 calls. While Gov. Hochul supports the idea, it was dropped from the final budget.

With session ending June 17, chances for passage this year are slim. Lawmakers like Phil Steck plan to revisit broader opioid measures in 2026. Meanwhile, a bidding process is underway to replace the state’s naloxone supply before the current $40 million contract expires.
