Yankees activate Jazz Chisholm Jr., place Luke Weaver on IL in slew of roster moves

Ahead of Tuesday’s series opener against the Cleveland Guardians, the New York Yankees announced a flurry of roster moves, headlined by the return of Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Luke Weaver going on the injured list.

Chisholm Jr., back after missing 28 games with an oblique strain, will take over at third base following a brief rehab stint with Double-A Somerset.

The bullpen took a major hit with the loss of closer Luke Weaver, who was placed on the IL after straining his hamstring while stretching Sunday in Los Angeles. Weaver has been one of MLB’s top relievers this season, boasting a 1.05 ERA and eight saves in 24 games. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports he could miss four to six weeks.

Right-hander Yerry De Los Santos was recalled to fill Weaver’s spot on the roster. In Weaver’s absence, Devin Williams is expected to close, with Cruz, Jonathan Loáisiga, and Mark Leiter Jr. handling setup duties.

Also, Fernando Cruz, sidelined recently with shoulder inflammation, rejoins the bullpen with a 2.66 ERA over 26 appearances this season.

To clear space on the roster for Chisholm Jr. and Cruz, infielder Jorbit Vivas was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and veteran right-hander Carlos Carrasco was designated for assignment.
