Multiple injured in NYS Thruway rollover crash involving 16-passenger van

State Police are investigating a rollover crash on the New York State Thruway that left multiple people injured—including 12 children—after a van collided with another vehicle Saturday afternoon in Orange County.

Troopers responded to the scene around 3:40 p.m. on May 31 in the southbound lanes near Exit 17 in the town of New Windsor. Investigators say a 2014 Chevrolet Express van struck the rear of a 2026 Subaru Outback that had slowed for traffic. The impact caused the van to roll over and come to rest in the left lane, while the Subaru spun onto the right shoulder and struck a sign post.

The van was carrying 16 people, including the driver and a front-seat passenger, along with 12 children between the ages of one and 12. The front passenger was extricated by the New Windsor Fire Department and airlifted to Westchester Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

The van’s driver and four of the children were taken to Garnet Health Medical Center, while the remaining passengers were treated at St. Luke’s Hospital. All injuries were reported as non-life threatening. The Subaru driver was also treated at Garnet Health Medical Center.

State Police issued tickets to the van’s driver after discovering that five of the children were not properly restrained.
