Veterans receiving disability compensation could be leaving money on the table if their family status has changed. Whether you’ve gotten married, had a child, or are supporting a student, updating your dependent information with the VA can increase your monthly benefit.
Here’s how to navigate the process in 2025.
What changes qualify?
You may be eligible for higher monthly VA disability payments if you:
- Got married or entered a common-law or tribal marriage
- Had or adopted a child
- Are supporting a child between ages 18 and 23 who is still in school
- Need to remove a dependent after divorce or other changes
Which form do you need?
The VA uses several forms depending on your situation:
- VA Form 21-686C – Standard form to add or remove dependents
- VA Form 21-674 – For children aged 18–23 enrolled in school
- VA Form 21P-527EZ – Used when applying for pension benefits
All forms can be completed online at VA.gov or with assistance from a Veterans Service Organization (VSO).
What documents are required?
Before submitting, gather this information:
- Social Security numbers for all dependents
- Marriage details, including previous marriages
- Children’s birthdates and SSNs
- School verification for student dependents
- Documentation for non-traditional or international marriages
- Dates of changes (e.g., divorce, dependent no longer eligible)
How to submit your paperwork
Once completed, you can upload your forms directly to the VA website. For more complex situations—such as non-traditional marriages or overseas dependents—you may need to include supporting documents like affidavits, marriage certificates, or birth records.
You’ll receive confirmation once your documents are submitted. Be sure to keep a copy.
When will your benefits change?
The VA processes updates in the order they’re received. If they need additional information, they will contact you. After a decision is made, you’ll receive a notification by mail.
If approved, your benefits will adjust to reflect the updated dependent status. In many cases, you may also receive back pay if your dependent was eligible before the application date.
