United Way of the Southern Tier awarded over $163,000 to support 14 programs helping senior citizens in Chemung and Steuben counties, according to the Elmira Star-Gazette.
The grants, drawn from the Senior Supports Fund, will help seniors age safely at home. Projects include home repairs, hospice volunteer training, mobility ramps, meals, and medical equipment. This year’s awards bring the fund’s total distribution to nearly $712,000 since its creation by an anonymous donor six years ago.
United Way CEO Maleaha Smith emphasized the region’s commitment to elderly care. Programs receiving funding include Arbor Housing, Meals on Wheels, and county aging offices, among others. The next round of grant applications will open in spring 2026.
