The New York Yankees opened their series in Seattle with an 11-5 win on Monday night, but the victory was marred by a serious injury to Oswaldo Cabrera in the ninth inning. The infielder fell to the ground in pain after scoring on a sacrifice fly, appearing to injure his ankle while turning back to touch home plate. Cabrera was taken off the field in an ambulance with his leg in an air cast.
Before the injury, the Yankees’ offense came alive, wearing down Mariners starter Emerson Hancock. After a quiet first trip through the order, the bats ignited. Trent Grisham homered twice, both times pulling New York even, and Aaron Judge, Ben Rice, and Austin Wells helped break the game open with a mix of small-ball and big hits. Wells finished with four RBIs, including a three-run shot, his eighth of the season.
Clarke Schmidt gave up a first-inning homer to Julio RodrÃguez but settled in after some early struggles. He worked into the seventh before yielding to the bullpen, which managed to hold the lead despite a late homer from Cal Raleigh.
Anthony Volpe added insurance with a towering solo shot in the eighth, his sixth of the season, and Judge drove in the final run.
The Yankees will send Max Fried to the mound on Tuesday as they look to notch a series win in Seattle. The first pitch is slated for 9:40 p.m.
