An Auburn man has pleaded guilty to a violent felony charge after admitting he tried to seriously injure a woman by setting her on fire during a July 2024 incident.
Cayuga County District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci announced that 51-year-old Mathew Mosher pleaded guilty on May 8 to one count of attempted assault in the first degree, a Class C violent felony. The plea was entered before Judge Thomas G. Leone in Cayuga County Court.
According to the indictment, Mosher admitted to intentionally pouring nail polish remover on the victim and then using a lighter to ignite it. The woman suffered burns on her leg as a result.
In a separate case, Mosher also pleaded guilty to aggravated family offense, a Class E felony, involving a different victim. He now faces up to 15 years in state prison with five years of post-release supervision for the assault charge, and an additional 2 to 4 years for the family offense.
Sentencing is scheduled for July. The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Courtney Venditte.
