Social Security Payments: Here’s who gets a check by May 15

The third week of May 2025 brings a highly anticipated Social Security payment to millions of retirees and disability beneficiaries. If you’re part of this group, your May 14 deposit should now be available—especially if you use direct deposit.

Who gets paid on May 14?

The Social Security Administration (SSA) follows a strict payment schedule each month. Benefits are distributed based on two key factors:

  1. When you started receiving Social Security
  2. Your date of birth

For Wednesday, May 14, payments go to beneficiaries who meet both of the following criteria:

  • You started receiving benefits after May 1997
  • You were born between the 1st and 10th of any month

This group is part of wave two of the monthly payment schedule and includes a large number of retirees and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) recipients.

When will the money arrive?

  • If you use direct deposit, your payment should have posted on May 14.
  • If you receive checks or use a slower deposit method, it may take up to three business days (May 15–17) to appear in your account.

How much will the payment be?

Social Security benefits for 2025 include the annual Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA), which increased payments by 2.5% starting in January. This boost is already reflected in May payments.

The actual amount you receive depends on your work and earnings history. Here are the maximum monthly payments in 2025:

  • $4,018: Retired at full retirement age (FRA) or on SSDI
  • $5,108: Retired at age 70 with delayed benefits
  • Reduced amount: Early retirement at age 62

Most people receive less than the maximum, but the May 14 check reflects your adjusted monthly benefit including the COLA increase.

What if I didn’t receive my payment?

If you’re eligible but haven’t seen your deposit:

  • Check your bank account or my Social Security portal
  • Allow up to 3 business days for processing if not on direct deposit
  • Contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 if there’s still no payment

What’s next?

Additional Social Security payments will be made later this month to those born in later date ranges. If you don’t qualify for the May 14 payment, your deposit may arrive on May 21 or May 28, depending on your birthday and benefit start date.
