New York’s prison system has lost nearly 20% of its correction officers since late 2024. A new report shows DOCCS staffing fell sharply after the firing of 2,000 officers to end a three-week strike earlier this year.
As of May 1, DOCCS reported just over 11,000 officers, sergeants, and lieutenants, down from 14,095.
Officials say rebuilding the department will take time, but they remain optimistic about attracting the next generation of officers.
