Rite Aid closures spark pharmacy desert fears in NY

More than 175 Rite Aid stores across New York will shut down following the company’s latest bankruptcy filing, according to Spectrum News. In rural communities like Ransomville, the closures could leave residents without a nearby pharmacy, creating so-called “pharmacy deserts.”

Local leaders, including Porter Supervisor Duffy Johnston, expressed frustration, noting there are no immediate alternatives for prescription services. Experts warn older adults will face the biggest hurdles, often forced to travel long distances without the convenience of online ordering.

Town officials are scrambling to attract a replacement pharmacy as the Ransomville store prepares to close at the beginning of next month, aiming to avoid worsening health access disparities.
