Legendary former Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim is making a return to basketball as Head Coach Emeritus for Boeheim’s Army, the Syracuse alumni team competing in The Basketball Tournament (TBT). The team will host the Syracuse Regional at the SRC Arena from July 19–23.
Boeheim, who retired in 2023 after 47 seasons and over 1,000 wins at Syracuse, will play an active role in team preparation, including recruiting and practice strategy, though he won’t coach during games.
Boeheim’s son, Buddy Boeheim, along with Elijah Hughes, Rakeem Christmas, and Chris McCullough, are the first confirmed players on the 2025 roster.
Team general manager Shaun Belbey said the Head Coach Emeritus title formally acknowledges Boeheim’s legacy and deep influence on the team. Businessman and philanthropist Adam Weitsman, instrumental in Boeheim’s Army’s 2021 TBT title, returns as chairman.
The Syracuse Regional winner will move on to the TBT quarterfinals on July 29, with semifinals on July 31 and the $1 million championship on August 3. For the first time, host teams can secure home-court advantage for later rounds by selling 4,000 tickets faster than rival hosts.
