Longtime NBC Sports host Mike Tirico was forced to exit Kentucky Derby coverage on Saturday due to a sudden allergic reaction, the network confirmed.
Sudden On-Air Exit Shocks Viewers
Tirico, who has anchored NBC’s coverage of the Derby since 2017, began experiencing symptoms shortly before the start of the network’s afternoon broadcast from Churchill Downs. NBC released a statement saying the veteran broadcaster received immediate medical attention and is expected to make a full recovery.
Lindsay Czarniak Steps In on Short Notice
With Tirico sidelined, NBC’s Lindsay Czarniak took over hosting duties, joining analysts Randy Moss and Jerry Bailey for the remainder of the broadcast. Political correspondent Steve Kornacki continued his role breaking down odds and betting trends live from the paddock.
NBC praised the broadcast team’s ability to adapt under pressure and thanked viewers for their understanding during the abrupt change in coverage.
Cause of Reaction Remains Unclear
While NBC has not disclosed the exact cause of Tirico’s allergic reaction, sources said the incident occurred during a break between pre-race segments. Tirico had been seen on-air earlier in the day without showing any visible signs of distress.
This marks the first time Tirico has missed a Kentucky Derby since replacing Bob Costas in 2017.
UPDATE: Tirico Expected to Recover Fully
NBC emphasized that Tirico is resting comfortably and in stable condition. It is not yet known whether he will resume duties for NBC’s upcoming sports broadcasts this week.
The 2025 Kentucky Derby, held under rainy conditions and featuring an unpredictable field, continued as scheduled with millions watching nationwide.
