Goodnight Moon stamps unveiled: How to buy the new USPS release

The U.S. Postal Service has launched a new set of Goodnight Moon stamps, celebrating one of the most beloved children’s books in American history. The stamps, available starting today, feature Clement Hurd’s original illustrations and debuted at The Rabbit hOle museum in North Kansas City, Missouri.

About the Goodnight Moon stamps

Designed by USPS art director Derry Noyes, the pane of 16 Forever stamps uses original illustrations by Clement Hurd. Each stamp captures cozy and iconic scenes that millions of families know and love.

The stamps are Forever stamps, meaning they will always hold the current First-Class Mail 1-ounce rate. You never need to add additional postage.

Importantly, the design mirrors the way the Great Green Room darkens over time in the story. This gradual change echoes the peaceful transition to sleep.

The lasting legacy of Goodnight Moon

First published in 1947, Goodnight Moon changed children’s literature by using simple language and everyday objects to create a soothing bedtime ritual.

Told in a rhythmic, gentle style, the story invites children to say goodnight to everything around them. Items like clocks, socks, the moon, and a little mouse in the room become part of the nightly farewell.

Clement Hurd’s attention to detail helped the book stand out. For instance, the clock moves forward as the story progresses, and a bowl of mush on the nightstand gradually disappears.

Although sales started slowly, Goodnight Moon exploded in popularity by the 1950s. Today, the book has sold more than 48 million copies, making it one of the best-selling children’s books ever.

At the event, Thacher Hurd, son of illustrator Clement Hurd, praised the new stamps. He said the unveiling at The Rabbit hOle was the perfect tribute to his father’s work.
