Max Fried was in complete control Friday night as the New York Yankees (19-13) blanked the Tampa Bay Rays (14-18), 3-0, at Yankee Stadium, extending their perfect record in Fried’s starts to 7-0.
Fresh off being named American League Pitcher of the Month, Fried opened May with another dominant performance. The lefty carried a no-hitter into the fifth and finished with seven scoreless innings, giving up just one hit and striking out six. In two outings against Tampa Bay this season, Fried has now thrown 14.2 shutout innings with only three hits allowed.
Paul Goldschmidt delivered the decisive blow in the fifth. With two on and two out, the veteran slugger sent a high fastball the other way for a three-run homer, his second in as many games.
Aaron Judge chipped in with a pair of extra-base hits, including a 108.5 mph triple to center and a double later in the game, lifting his average to .430 to open May.
Rookie Jorbit Vivas impressed in his Major League debut, drawing two walks and scoring a run while holding his own defensively at second base.
Devin Williams and Luke Weaver shut the door late, with Weaver recording his third save and maintaining his spotless ERA.
The Yankees will look to secure a series win on Saturday at 1:05 p.m. with Clarke Schmidt on the mound.
